Using Qingtian Tone Sandhi Data to Refine Depressor Morphotonemics
نویسنده
چکیده
Depressor features have been described for many varieties of Wu Chinese, from Shanghai south to the Ou varieties of Wenzhou. Acoustic tone sandhi data from the Chu variety of Qingtian refine the particulars of [±depressor]. Acoustic depressor features do not occur through the whole tone pattern, but do occur on syllables with voiceless initials and without initial consonants. No connection is found between depressor syllables and voicing in the data, suggesting that the depressor feature is indeed a feature of morphemes, rather than segments.

متن کاملA Study on Implementation of Southern-Min Taiwanese Tone Sandhi System
In the past two hundred years or so, a sizable corpus of Taiwanese text in Latin script has been accumulated. However, due to the political and historical situation of Taiwan, few people can read these materials at present. It is regrettable that the utilization of these plentiful materials is very low. This paper addresses problems raised by the Taiwanese tone sandhi system by describing a set...
متن کاملA corpus study of the 3rd tone sandhi in standard Chinese

This study investigates the acoustic characteristics of the 3 tone Sandhi in Standard Chinese using a large telephone conversation speech corpus. Sandhi Rising was found to be different from the underlying Rising tone (Tone2) in bi-syllabic words in two measure...
متن کاملStructure-dependent tone sandhi in real and nonce disyllables in Shanghai Wu
Disyllabic sequences in Shanghai Wu undergo different types of tone sandhi depending on their structure: phonological words (e.g., modifier–nouns) spread the initial tone across the disyllable, while phrases (e.g., nonlexicalized verb–nouns) maintain the final tone and level the contour of the nonfinal tone. We investigated the productivity of the two tone sandhi types through 48 speakers’ prod...
متن کاملMechanisms of Tone Sandhi Rule Application by Non-Native Speakers
This study is the first to examine acquisition of two Mandarin tone sandhi rules by Cantonese speakers. It designs both real and different types of wug words to test whether learners may exploit a lexical or computation mechanism in tone sandhi rule application. We also statistically compared their speech production with Beijing Mandarin speakers. The results of functional data analysis showed ...
